Pasear, detenerse. Entrance to Monterrón Park

Award: Finalist proposal in an ideas competition

Pasear, Detenerse is our proposed response to the brief set out by the municipality of Mondragón (Gipuzkoa), given the need to improve the blocked access to Monterrón Park—an area in a privileged location with high ecological and landscape value.

The project addresses universal accessibility not as a problem to be solved, but as the leitmotif for the new access. In this way, a transition element between the city and the park is designed: a new, more open access with comfortable circulation. The ramp and the staircase, usually designed as independent elements, are combined to form a space of stepped seating and gentle-slope ramps that enhance
the experience of the approach to the park. A public space that seeks a new identity, where circulation and stay areas coexist.

The prioritisation of pedestrian movement is likewise implemented to the south of the intervention, through a shared-surface platform that extends from the park access to Zugin Kantoia, the main pedestrian axis of the old town. In addition, cycling is encouraged, and the existing heritage—the current music school—is highlighted. Likewise, the proposal seeks to contribute to improving the environmental and landscape qualities of the space through the implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems and the planting of a diversity of plant species.
